Sahibzada Ajit Singh Ji (The Battle of Chamkaur)

Sahibzada Ajit Singh crossed the Sarsa, then in spate, along with his father, his younger brother, Jujhar Singh, and some fifty Sikhs. Further reduced in numbers by casualties at the hands of a pursuing troop from Ropar, the column reached Chamkaur in the evening of 6 December 1705, and took up position in a garhi, a highwalled fortified haveli (house). The attackers, their numbers since swelled by reinforcements from Malerkotia, Sirhind and from among the local Ranghars and Gujjars, soon caught up with them and threw a tight ring around Chamkaur.

The Champion of the Khalsa 'Hari Singh Nalwa'

Hari Singh Nalwa's performance as an administrator and a military commander in the North West Frontier remains unmatched. Two centuries on, Britain, Pakistan, Russia and America have been unsuccessful in effecting law and order in this region. Hari Singh Nalwa's spectacular achievements exemplified the tradition established by Guru Gobind Singh such that he came to be hailed as the "Champion of the Khalsa".

Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Ji

Baba Banda Singh Bahadur (16 October, 1670 - 9 June, 1716) (Lachhman Dev alias Madho dass Bairagi), originally from the Jammu region, is revered as one of greatest Sikh warriors as well as one of the most hallowed martyrs of the Khalsa Army. The Khalsa were engaged in a prolonged fight against the cruel Mughals, who were practising their tyranny and terrorism. His confrontation with the Mughal administration in Northern India, though brief, was strong and vigorous enough to shake the foundations of this evil empire.

Akali Nihang Singhs (The Warriors)

Nihangs (also: called Akalis) are a very famous and prestigious armed Sikh order. Early Sikh military history is dominated by the Akali Sikh military order that is particularly noted for the many famous military victories they won, often while they were heavily out-numbered. The Nihungs have historically been held in great affection and respect by Sikhs due the pivotal role they have played in Sikh history and Sikh military history in particular. The Nihang's activities are currently mostly ceremonial, as it is peace time but in times of war for the Sikh religion the Akalis have historically spear-headed the attack on the enemy.

Mata Bhag Kaur Ji

Mai Bhago also known as Mata Bhag Kaur was a Sikh woman who led Sikh soldiers against the Mughals in 1705. She killed several enemy soldiers on the battlefield, and is considered to be a saint warrior by the Sikhs. She was the sole survivor of the battle of Khidrana, i.e. Battle of Muktsar (fought on 29 December 1705); was a daughter of Bhai Mallo Shah, granddaughter of Bhai Pero Shah, the younger brother of Bhai Langah, a Dhillon Jatt Chaudhary of 84 villages who had become a Sikh during the time of Guru Arjan, the fifth Sikh Guru. She was the only sister of four brothers.

Sikhs in UK to serve langar during Olympic Torch Relay

Sikhs in the UK will serve langar along the route of the Olympic Torch Relay on July 21, informed United Sikhs Project Director Langar, 2012 Mejindarpal Kaur on Wednesday.

She said the organization had held an exhibition as a pre-event to celebrate the Olympic Torch Relay in which the 101-year-old Fauja Singh had also participated.

Daniel Connell

The exhibition by Australian artist, Daniel Connell, titled: Identity: Sikhs Embracing Diversity, was held at the Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha Southall, London, to showcase the Sikh identity, during the Queen's Diamond Jubilee weekend.

She also said that the drawings were not of martyrs but of ordinary Sikh men who had recently migrated from Punjab to Adelaide in Australia. "United Sikhs will work with Sikh gurdwaras and individuals in the UK and from around the world by serving langar during the London Olympic Torch Relay when Fauja Singh will carry the Olympic Torch. Fauja Singh is the community's gift to the world," said project manager for Langar 2012 Parvinder Kaur.
Parvinder informed that in order to engage the Sikh community in the UK for Langar 2012 they were holding a series of pre-events. Moreover, the exhibition by Australian artist Daniel Connell had proved to be a good start for a dialogue in the community about what it needs to do to showcase its identity.
